A couple weeks ago, Janelle of Emmaline Bags had a sale and I had my eye on a particular pattern in her shop. The Manhattan bag. From the moment that I saw the Manhattan bag, I knew that I was going to make it. The front flap zippered pocket and accent fabric pocket really grabbed my attention. So over the weekend I got to work and this is what I ended up with.
Two Nifty Pockets
I think I only really planned to sew the misses size of the pattern. The small bag looked awesome, so I decided to go ahead and make the momma size as well. I am after all a momma, and I carry a lot of stuff most of the time.
Manhattan Bag – Misses
This size comes with a front pocket, zippered flap pocket and a pouch pocket on the inside. It isn’t big enough for me to put all my junk, but when I go out on a date with my sweet Robert I will be in style.
I had quite a time finding the perfect fabric to go with this Robert Kaufman Essex Linen. I used what I had leftover from my Islander Systems Jacket that I made. (This will look so cute with that, I’m totally nerding about it.) The lining is Cotton and Steel, not sure what the fabric line is, but it is older.
When I got to the strap, I wasn’t sure if I was going to make one out of the same fabric. My other option was to make it out of faux leather fabric. As you can see, I chose the linen fabric. Can I just say, linen fabric sews and presses so nicely! I love how it looks with top-stitching too.
Manhattan Bag – Momma
It is just so cute that the large bag size is actually named “Momma” sized. And that makes sense, momma’s need more room than their daughters. We have keys, check books, wallets, sunglasses, receipts, coupons, leftover fortune cookies, etc. Today I went to the grocery store with my misses sized Manhattan bag and quite frankly, there wasn’t enough room. So there you have it. The smaller bag will only be for date night, and this one will go with me everywhere else.
I used an iKat patterned fabric with some Fleet and Flourish that I had leftover from my quilt. For the strap I used cotton webbing because I thought it would be easier. I am having second thoughts though. I may decide to make a strap out of the iKat in the future.
This zippered flap pocket is huge! I love all the room it has, I could probably put a notebook in there. Or some socks. The possibilities are endless. As long as they are flat.
I used the right kind of zipper on this bag, one inch wide by 22 inches long. On the other bag, I didn’t have a one inch wide by 14 inch zipper and I was too excited about making it to go to the store. I do kind of regret it now, but at the time I was happy to keep plugging along.
The Momma sized bag has the same amount of pockets with an additional hidden zippered pocket on the back.
It was great fun getting to make a new bag that some one else designed. Learning new things is what makes life interesting!
